The Newcastle Eagles scored another crucial win over their biggest rivals, the SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks, in beating them 113-89 at the MetroRadio Arena to go to 2-0 in BBL Trophy Group 4. This was Newcastle's sixth consecutive win and gives them a significant advantage in the group.
Olu Babalola, Andrew Bridge, and Jeremt Hyatt were influential as they scored 21 points each for the Eagles. Player/coach Sterling Davis led from the front with 19 points in vain for the Rocks.
The Eagles held the early advantage at 13-8, before 6 straight points from the visitors put them in front at 13-14. The Eagles posted a late 7-0 tear to take a 27-23 lead by the end of the first quarter, one that they would not relinquish.
The hosts led 35-34 in the second before Olu Babalola (6) and Charles Smith (5) combined in a 13-0 surge that gave them a comfortable 48-34 lead, which became 53-38 going into the locker rooms.
Andrew Bridge and Jeremy Hyatt controlled the third stanza. Bridge shot 9/10 from the free-throw line on his way to 11 third quarter points, whilst Hyatt connected on four three-pointers to put the game beyond the Rocks at 84-60.
As points difference counts in the BBL Trophy, the Eagles kept up the pressure late in the game and broke through the 100-point barrier as they eased to the victory.
