Newcastle Eagles moved four points clear at the top of the BBL Championship with a tense 79-75 win over cross-border rivals SAMG Verve Scottish Rocks.

The result boosts Eagles hopes of regaining the title, but seriously dents Rocks ambitions of a top four finish.

After a tight first quarter, which Eagles took 20-17, the home side fell behind 33-35 before rallying to lead 41-35. Maurice Hampton hit a late three to bring the score back to 41-38 at half time.

Eagles looked in control during the third quarter as a they stretched out o 47-41 and 52-43. However, Rocks chipped away at the gap and levelled the score at 57-57 going into the final stanza.

Rocks forged ahead 61-69 and looked to be heading for a vital away win before Eagles responded to tie the match at 72-72. A 5-0 burst after falling 72-74 behind handed Newcastle the lead for good as Andrew Bridge hit two free throws in the final seconds to seal the victory.
